ANNINGTON CHALLENGES LOCAL SWANTON MORLEY SCHOOL TO BRING STORIES TO LIFE THIS TERM

A local primary school in Swanton Morley is the latest school to partake in Annington’s Reading Challenge. At the end of last term Swanton Morley V.C Primary School, close to Annington’s collection of homes at Worthing Fields, was treated to a visit from a storyteller from Epic Tales Storytelling to launch the exciting new initiative. This is the second school in the area to take part in the challenge set by Annington, with children from nearby Watton also getting involved in the drive to encourage more primary school age children to enjoy reading.

Overall, five primary schools near locations where Annington is selling homes participated in the summer reading programme hosted and supported by the company, to encourage children to develop their interest in reading and sharing stories ahead of this next school year. In partnership with storyteller Chip Colquhoun from Epic Tales, pupils let their imaginations run wild as part of an afternoon workshop and were treated to three stories, including the tale of a young boy called Boot who outsmarted an evil troll.

The story follows Boot, a young boy who has been picked on by his elder brothers, until he demonstrates the power of cunning over fisticuffs by defeating a troll. The class teacher played the troll, and the children were delighted in squirting her with water to ultimately overcome the wicked beast!

Afterwards, to encourage the children to read at least one book over the summer holidays, Annington donated an array of books for pupils to enjoy.

Stacy Whitehead, Marketing Manager at Annington, said: “The Annington Reading Challenge has been a wonderful opportunity for us to get involved right at the heart of the communities that we work in. Working with schools locally in places like Swanton Morley and Watton, we wanted to help inject a bit of fun into the idea of picking up a book, and to inspire the children to go out and read more. The pupils seemed to have read plenty this summer, and we can’t wait to hear about all the other stories they read throughout this next school year.”

Lucy Haynes, Class Teacher at Swanton Morley V.C. Primary School, adds: “Nurturing a love for literature is something we always want to focus on across the school. The Reading Challenge really helped us to spark a conversation about why reading is so important and how fun and exciting it can be. The storytelling session was so immersive, I even found myself getting caught up in the excitement! We’re really grateful to Annington for providing the opportunity to the pupils. They have read lots over summer and since term resumed have been getting stuck into their new books donated by Annington.”
